Walnut Tree Cottage

Walnut Tree Cottage is a characterful historic property that required a comprehensive programme of conservation works to safeguard its future while preserving the features that make it unique.

Working closely with the client and the wider project team, AGA Heritage Conservation delivered a sympathetic restoration that respected the building’s original construction, traditional materials and architectural character. Every intervention was carefully considered to ensure the cottage retained its heritage value while providing a safe and sustainable building for years to come.

The Challenge

Like many historic cottages, Walnut Tree Cottage had experienced the effects of age, weathering and previous repairs carried out using inappropriate modern materials.

Our team was tasked with carefully repairing the building without compromising its historic fabric. This required a detailed understanding of traditional construction methods, allowing repairs to be carried out using compatible materials that would protect the building for the future.

As with many conservation projects, every stage of the works revealed new details about the building, requiring a flexible and collaborative approach to ensure the restoration remained true to its original character.

Our Solution

AGA Heritage Conservation undertook a programme of carefully planned conservation works, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern conservation best practice.

The works included:

  • Conservation and repair of the external building fabric.
  • Traditional lime plaster repairs using breathable materials.
  • Structural repairs where required.
  • Stone masonry repairs and repointing.
  • Roofing repairs using traditional materials.
  • Bespoke timber joinery.
  • Careful restoration of original architectural features.
  • Sensitive making good and finishing works.

Throughout the project, protecting as much of the original building as possible remained our priority. Wherever practical, existing materials were repaired rather than replaced, helping preserve the authenticity and character of the cottage.

The Result

The completed restoration has given Walnut Tree Cottage a new lease of life while maintaining the charm and craftsmanship that define this historic property.

The building is now structurally secure, weatherproof and ready for many more years of use, with every repair completed in keeping with its original construction and appearance.

Projects such as Walnut Tree Cottage demonstrate AGA Heritage Conservation’s commitment to delivering thoughtful, high-quality restoration work that balances the needs of today’s buildings with respect for their history.
