Restoration and Adaptive Reuse of a 16th-Century Property

AGA Heritage Conservation is delighted to announce a new project at Eastgate, Cowbridge, involving the careful restoration and adaptation of a historic 16th-century building.

This exciting scheme will see the property sensitively transformed to accommodate a commercial unit at ground floor level and a duplex residential apartment above, ensuring the building remains both functional and relevant while preserving its historic character.

Project Overview

The works will focus on restoring the building’s original features while introducing carefully considered structural and architectural improvements. The aim is to strike a balance between heritage conservation and modern use, ensuring the longevity of the building for future generations.

Scope of Works

The project will include:

  • Roof replacement using traditional Welsh slate, maintaining the building’s historic appearance while improving performance and durability

  • Removal of inappropriate cement render and reinstatement with breathable lime-based finishes, allowing the structure to perform as originally intended

  • Reintroduction of traditional sash windows at upper levels, enhancing both the aesthetic and authenticity of the façade

  • Formation of two additional floor levels, creating a flexible and sustainable layout comprising a commercial unit and a duplex apartment

A Sensitive Approach to Restoration

As with all AGA Heritage Conservation projects, the approach will prioritise:

  • Retention of original fabric wherever possible

  • Use of traditional materials and techniques

  • Careful integration of new elements to complement the historic structure

  • Compliance with conservation and planning requirements

Looking Ahead

This project represents a fantastic opportunity to bring new life to a historic property in the heart of Cowbridge, ensuring it continues to contribute to the character and vitality of the area.

We look forward to sharing updates as works progress and showcasing the transformation of this unique building.
