Recently, a Cardiff University office had to be closed due to concerns over failing stonework at the entrance. The structural issue posed a safety risk and required urgent attention to get the building operational again.

Following a call from Cartwright Construction, our team at AGA Heritage Conservation was able to mobilise within just a few days. Upon inspection, we identified the cause as corroded iron cramps embedded within the stonework. Over time, these had expanded, creating pressure and cracking in the surrounding stone — a common but serious problem in older buildings.

Our solution was both practical and conservation-led. We carefully dismantled the affected sections, removing the damaged cramps, and replacing them with stainless steel pins to prevent future corrosion. The stonework was then rebuilt and finished to match the existing historic fabric, ensuring both safety and visual continuity.

The result: a secure, restored entrance that is now fully operational and ready for use once more.
