AGA Heritage Conservation was appointed to undertake the sensitive restoration of several listed buildings at Park Place, Cardiff—a distinguished Victorian terrace forming part of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage. The project required meticulous conservation techniques to preserve historic character while ensuring the buildings meet contemporary performance standards.
Scope of Work
Phase 1 involved the restoration and conservation of the first two buildings within the terrace. Our team carried out a comprehensive programme of heritage works, including:
Careful cleaning, repair, and repointing of original stonework
Restoration of historic facades and architectural detailing
Structural stabilisation where required
Conservation-grade joinery and window refurbishment
Roof and leadwork renewal using traditional methods and materials
Each intervention was guided by conservation best practice, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the buildings were retained throughout.
Challenges and Approach
Working within a city-centre conservation area, our approach balanced precision, sensitivity, and efficiency. The project required coordination with conservation officers and heritage consultants to ensure full compliance with listed building consents.
Our team adopted a fabric-first philosophy, focusing on repair rather than replacement. Every stone and feature was assessed for condition and retained wherever feasible, ensuring maximum preservation of original material.
Results
The successful completion and sign-off of the first two buildings marks a major milestone in the wider restoration of Park Place. The transformation has been met with enthusiastic feedback from our client and positive comments from the public, who have praised the renewed elegance of the buildings.
The restored façades now stand as a testament to careful craftsmanship and collaboration—bringing renewed life to one of Cardiff’s most recognisable historic streets.
