Restoring Craftsmanship and Character at an Iconic Welsh Landmark
AGA Heritage Conservation is proud to have completed specialist conservation works at Newport Cathedral, a site of deep historic and cultural significance in South Wales. The project focused on enhancing the cathedral’s external approach and reinstating important historic elements, blending sensitive craftsmanship with durable, high-quality finishes.
Bespoke Heritage Handrail & Concrete Cast Wall
One of the key features of this project was the installation of a bespoke heritage handrail, now fully finished with its final protective coat. The handrail sits proudly atop the new concrete cast wall, creating a robust yet sympathetic boundary that complements the cathedral’s architecture.
The wall is completed with beautifully fitted Bath stone coping stones, chosen for their compatibility with the existing building fabric and their proven durability in heritage settings. These elements work together to deliver both visual harmony and long-term resilience.
Ancient Ledgers Re-Laid for Authenticity
An important part of the project was the careful re-laying of the ancient ledger stones, returning them to their original positions. These historic slabs, each holding centuries of memory, now sit seamlessly within the newly restored setting.
Their reinstatement not only strengthens the narrative of the site but also enhances the atmosphere, authenticity, and sense of place that Newport Cathedral is known for.
A Sensitive Approach to Heritage
Every aspect of this project was guided by conservation best practice, ensuring that newly introduced materials worked in harmony with historic ones. The result is a thoughtful enhancement of the cathedral grounds—strengthening the structure, improving functionality, and preserving the heritage character for generations to come.
Completion
The completed works provide a renewed sense of arrival at Newport Cathedral, celebrating craftsmanship while respecting the building’s deep historical roots. AGA Heritage Conservation is honoured to have contributed to the ongoing care and stewardship of this cherished Welsh landmark.
