We’re excited to announce that AGA Heritage Conservation has been appointed Principal Contractor for the first phase of renovation works at Gastard House, a beautiful Victorian property in Wiltshire dating back to 1871.
Working with the property’s new owners, we’ll be undertaking a programme of specialist restoration and structural works designed to protect the building’s historic character while making important improvements for its future.
It’s a fantastic project for our team and another opportunity to demonstrate our expertise in the sympathetic restoration of historic buildings.
A New Chapter for Gastard House
Built in 1871, Gastard House is a wonderful example of Victorian architecture, with original features and traditional construction that deserve careful attention.
As with many properties of this age, successful renovation requires a considered approach, balancing the retention of historic fabric with the need for structural repairs and modern improvements.
Our appointment as Principal Contractor will see AGA manage and deliver the first phase of works, ensuring that each element is approached with the care, expertise and attention to detail that heritage buildings demand.
Phase 1 – The Restoration Works
The first phase of the project will focus on several important areas of the property, including its roof, windows, structural timberwork and internal layout.
New Slate Roof
A new slate roof will form a key part of the restoration, helping to protect the building from the elements and secure its long-term condition.
Slate roofing is a traditional feature of many historic properties, and careful installation will ensure the new roof complements the architectural character of Gastard House.
Restoration of Original Sash Windows
The existing sash windows will be carefully restored, retaining their traditional appearance while incorporating retrofitted double glazing.
This approach will help improve thermal performance and comfort without unnecessarily replacing the original window features that contribute to the building’s Victorian character.
Improved Access to the Bell Tower
The project will also involve creating new access into the property’s bell tower.
This will require careful consideration of the existing structure, ensuring that the proposed alterations are sympathetic to the building and its historic fabric.
Structural Timber Repairs
Repairs to rotten structural timbers will be another important element of Phase 1.
Our team will assess and undertake the necessary repairs, with a focus on retaining sound existing material wherever practical and ensuring the building remains structurally secure.
Internal Structural Alterations
The programme will also include internal structural alterations to support the wider renovation of the property.
These works will be carefully coordinated to accommodate the building’s future requirements while respecting its original construction and character.
Combining Traditional Craftsmanship with Modern Performance
At AGA Heritage Conservation, we believe successful restoration is about understanding the building before deciding how best to intervene.
Historic properties such as Gastard House require specialist knowledge, appropriate materials and skilled tradespeople who understand traditional construction.
Whether we’re restoring sash windows, repairing structural timberwork or undertaking roofing works, our priority is always to deliver practical, lasting solutions that respect the original building.
The introduction of modern improvements, including double glazing, demonstrates how historic properties can be sensitively adapted to meet contemporary expectations without losing the features that make them special.
Looking Ahead
We’re delighted to be working with the new owners of Gastard House and look forward to seeing the first phase of this exciting renovation take shape.
Being appointed Principal Contractor is a responsibility we take seriously, and our team is looking forward to delivering another high-quality heritage restoration project.
We’ll be sharing updates throughout the works, offering a closer look at the craftsmanship, challenges and progress involved in bringing this Victorian property into its next chapter.
