Excellent Progress at Eastgate, Cowbridge
Works are progressing well at our Eastgate project in Cowbridge, where AGA Heritage Conservation is undertaking the sensitive restoration and adaptation of this historic property.
One of the major milestones achieved so far has been the renewal of the roof. To retain the building’s historic character, existing Welsh slates in good condition have been carefully salvaged and reused alongside matching reclaimed slates. This approach not only preserves the appearance of the property but also supports sustainable conservation principles by retaining original materials wherever possible.
Elsewhere on the project, the existing cement render has now been removed. While commonly used in more modern repairs, cement can prevent traditional buildings from breathing correctly, often trapping moisture within historic masonry. By carefully stripping the cement render, the building can once again function as intended, allowing moisture to evaporate naturally through the structure.
The walls are now being prepared for the application of new lime render coats. Lime is a traditional, breathable material that works in harmony with historic buildings, helping to protect the fabric while enhancing both appearance and long-term performance.
Although there is still much work to be completed, the transformation is already becoming apparent. With the new roof in place and the building beginning to reveal its original character, Eastgate is well on its way to becoming another successful heritage restoration project.
We look forward to sharing further updates as works continue and this historic Cowbridge property is brought back to life.
